That's about 6 times its MSRP. The proceeds will go towards helping youth programs in Monterey county. This i8 was presented by Jay Leno and Ludwig Willisch. What makes this i8 so different?
The words Concours d'elegance are laser etched into the interior. The car is painted in a special frozen gray, with a beautiful Dalbergia brown leather interior. The leather is tanned using the extract from plants. BMW i blue contrast stitching brings the interior together while being used in other trim pieces.

About a year ago I acquired (through completely legal means) a pair of limited edition Nike Air Jordans for free. Now, I don't give a shit about shoes and I definitely didn't know anything about limited edition Air Jordans at the time. Needless to say, you can imagine the pleasant shock I received when I found out how much they were. The original MSRP was about $125, but because they were no longer in production they were going on eBay for 2 to 3 times that much. Before I sold them I tried them on and while I found that they were pretty decent shoes, they weren't that good. Still, when I put it on eBay at a buy now price of $250 and within minutes ( MINUTES!!! ) someone bought them.
Why do I mention this? Because this is proof that if you put the right name on anything you can get stupid people to spend insane amounts of money to buy it.

Yes. The golf course there is really sub-par.

Obviously not because Salinas Fairways is an excellent muni course especially since the renovation.

You know, rather than spend 6 times MSRP on one, I'd prefer to spend a little extra and buy one for each day of the week. Or I would, if I could get at least one of them in red. Oh well.

No necessarily. Assuming they haven't all been pushed somewhere else due to cost of living (like Aspen) these places tend to have a pretty sizable population of workers in the service industries just scraping by.

I know when you picture Monterey County, you picture ocean-front mansions, rich kids having bonfires on white sand beaches, and people sipping bubbly before regattas, but a vast majority of that (everything not along the coast) county isn't very fancy at all. After driving through some of the more run-down, rural, out of the way parts (admittedly while on my way to Monterey/Pacific Grove), I wasn't surprised at all when I read that the median family income for Monterey County is under $50k.

Not a sneaker head, but I collect sunglasses. I think it's unfair to call people "stupid" for spending money on something they enjoy. I'm pretty sure you also spent money on something that had a price beyond it's intrinsic value (capital, labor, material etc.).
Any case, your sneaker story reminded me of something: i was huntingna specific pair of persol sunglasses for a long time. Found them on ebay, participated in the bidding and left when the price hit €300. Eventually the glasses were sold for €430. A week later, I found the exact same model on ebay with the difference that the seller didnt indicate in the model number. I bought the glasses for €30.

Monterey COUNTY is where the money goes. Monterey County is not all supercars and beaches. They also have the highest murder rate per capita of any county in California, a large gang problem and rampant poverty.

I can think of a few neighborhoods that you likely wouldn't want to drive through let alone walk through. I mean *I* don't have a problem with it, (live there, know it) but your average Jalopnik reader would soil his skivvies and high tail it the fuck out of there.
Here's a pro-tip

I'm just wondering whether you could get a new i8 from BMW with a chrome kidney. The i8 looks mean in black/black - but this blue "Eco-kidney" or whatever it's meant to be doesn't really fit the look.
For reference: http://wikigag.com/wp-content/upl…
Edit: Nevermind. Just played around on BMWs website. You can get a grey (?) kidney if you choose certain exterior colours (grey/grey for example; not black/black though).

I.e. my car. But the difference is that I actually use my car. Sneaker dudes buy these shoes and keep them in the box like Star Wars action figures, lest wearing them decreases their value. If you wear those sunglasses, then go with God. Lord knows that a good pair of sunglasses makes all the difference in the world (I wear prescription lenses so all of my sunglasses are, by default, expensive as hell). But spending copious amounts of money on something you purposely never use that was designed to be used is the definition of stupid.

In principle I agree, just that I refrain from calling people stupid for the things they do (when it comes to collecting items etc.). Regarding my sunglasses, I have around 25 pairs. Some I wear daily, others seldomly and then there are some that I wear only on very special occasions (e.g. the aforementioned Persol sunglasses). I have some that don't really fit me that well, but in general I like their design and the story behind them.

After you read the answer to this question: "What makes this i8 so different?" you find the answer is nothing. You also really understand how arrogant rich people are. If you asked the same person to donate $700K ($825k - The normal price of the car) they would tell you to fuck off.

That doesn't make it any less stupid. I can't fathom the logic (other than making that sweet, sweet money) of buying a comic book and never taking it out of the bag to keep its value up. I know that these people claim to do it because they love comic books, but they only buy them because of how much somebody else will value it in the future. How can they claim to love something that they treat like a stock option or oil futures?
The same thing goes for all those car auction shows. Yes the cars are pretty to look at, but always in the back of my mind I know that the bidding audience is filled with little Wayne Carinis who view those cars as nothing more than rolling six to seven figure Pokemon cards. I just find the whole act of buying something for the intention of sitting on it until the value goes up to be deplorable. It's not an honest way to make money.
